Questions people actually ask

Straight answers on cost, insurance, safety, and what to expect, without the hedging and without the hype.

Is depression really worth treating early, or should I wait to see if it passes?+

Untreated depression tends to last longer and can be more likely to return. Treating it early usually means more options, less disruption to your work and relationships, and decisions made with more of your own energy intact. Waiting until a crisis is a habit, not a medical requirement.

What are the newer treatments for depression?+

Beyond talking therapy and medication, the two best-known newer options are esketamine (Spravato), an FDA-approved nasal spray given under medical supervision, and TMS, an FDA-cleared, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic pulses. Both are typically considered when standard treatments have not brought enough relief.

Is esketamine the same as ketamine, and is it safe?+

Esketamine is a component of the ketamine molecule, formulated as a nasal spray and FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. It is given only in a certified clinic where you are monitored for about two hours afterward. That supervision is the safeguard that lets a fast-acting medication be used responsibly.

Does insurance cover treatments like Spravato and TMS?+

Often, yes, though coverage, prior authorization, and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan. Many plans require that you have tried other treatments first. The practical step is to have a certified provider verify your specific benefits. Our recommended provider accepts most insurance, including MO HealthNet for eligible Missouri patients.

Can these treatments cure my depression?+

No treatment for depression is a cure or a guarantee. Therapy, medication, esketamine, and TMS all help some people and not others. Honest, modern care is about finding the combination that helps you, and adjusting when something does not work.

Do I have to try medication before other options?+

Not necessarily, but many insurance plans and clinicians do start with therapy or medication before newer options like esketamine or TMS. What is right depends on your history and health, and it is a decision to make with a clinician.

I live outside Missouri. Can this guide still help me?+

Yes. Modern Mental Health is a national guide. The explanations of depression, PTSD, and each treatment apply anywhere. For a local clinic, use our recommended provider as a model and ask a practice near you the same questions, or contact the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 for referrals in your area.

What should I do if I am in crisis right now?+

If you are thinking about suicide or are in immediate danger, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and confidential, 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate physical danger, call 911.
